Sulcorebutia are high altitude cacti from the mountains of Bolivia.
They enjoy a cool winter rest to encourage flowering.
The flowers are generally a vibrant colour of purple or red.
South American Cacti General Care Guidelines:
Generally, cacti require exposure to full sun, however on the hottest days it is advisable to provide some shade. Bright airy locations such as greenhouses and windowsills are the best places to grow them. Never move a plant from shade to full sun suddenly.
Always acclimatise gradually.
Also, cacti enjoy a cool dry winter rest period with temperatures not dropping below 5°C to 0°C depending on the species. This dry rest period protects them from cold damage and promotes flowering the following summer.
Water moderately from March to October but only when the soil is completely dry. This may be about once every two weeks or so in spring and summer. Suspend watering completely in winter unless the plants are kept in a heated room, where they may need a little water occasionally.
A well-draining compost mix is necessary. It's best to add 50% coarse grit to the potting medium, as it helps to avoid root rot. Generally South American cacti tend to grow better in a slightly acidic compost (Ericaceous compost) with a pH of about 5-7.
Cacti generally don’t need frequent fertilisation. A low nitrogen feed, such as tomato fertiliser, is sufficient at half recommended strength about once every month during the summer growing period. Ericaceous fertilisers are also available which help maintain a low pH level in the pot.
